Right, So people have requested a tutorial on hair. As always, this is simply how 1 do things. Doesn’t mean it's the right or wrong way to do it. Just my way. 1 work best by example so that's how I always do these. Hope this is helpful. First thing to note. Hair has a few ways of parting. Starting at the crown and kinda swirling, you see this with hair thats quite short often. Longer hair has usually got a centre or side parting. Can be straight or messy. There's also a zig-zag parting. Dx I always wanted that one when i was young. And of course hair has a set are where it sprouts from which is shown by the red. Fringes and bangs start from the front section Of course this is one example, people are unique and have different shapes. This is just my standard, feel behind your ear, see how much space there is without hair? Or feel how far down the nape of your neck your hair goes. To start, draw a basic idea of what you want the hair to be like. If you’re designing a character you will be using a lot, maybe save the basic image. It will help you to keep it consistant in future pictures if you have the basic shape to start with. Then in the next 2 drawings all i'm doing is refining it and adding detail. Nothing much more to that, it's so easy, just start simple. Okay so here is a drawing of hair in rotation. Again, start basic. Don't add detail until you’re happy with the basic drawing. When im adding detail i used the red brush but always had a white brush ready to clean as I went along. Otherwise it gets too confusing and there's hair everywhere. So work piece by piece. Note: A pet peeve of mine is eyes being drawn thru hair...If there's something in front of it, you can’t see it. That goes for ears, noses, eyebrows. At the most you’re gonna see broken little bits. 1 know the eye looks pretty and all but it's not realistic if it's floating over the hair...it's kind of freaky. I think these drawings kind of speak for themselves. Just wanted to go thru it from short -> medium -> long. X”DD I was trying to avoid using any of my own characters for this. Lol so i started gravitating to fanart instead. Okay the long hair is probably where the build up is most noticeable. Start basic, then added detail, but for long hair I *love* having it draping over shoulders and also getting little tangles where the hair separates They're just nice little details that make it look a lot more complex than it actually is. Patience is key! Okay, this for me is kind of an important point. When your head moves...your hair moves independently of it....yes 1 know, sounds quite outlandish- but those animes with the kids with the plastic hair that doesn't move...they were lying to you. Now if your hair is gelled into spikes and whatnot, then it's gonna be a little less mobile. That's common sense. So spikes and things will move a bit less. But if you have hair thats just washed and unstyled and has the lenght to do so then it will move around all the time. Wind will move it, nodding will move it. Yes, it takes a bit more effort to draw this and can hide features that you spent a while drawing. But i’m sure you've all stepped outside the door after spending 10 minutes doing your hair and had the wind go ‘HAH! WHOOOSH!!' and flipped it right in your face. Realism. Okay, we’re closing on on the last leg of the race. Hairstyles, pigtails, ponytails, braids...whoever made up those names was an animal person. To do any of these your hair has to be pulled to the point, so draw those lines in. Doesn’t have to just hang, it can be twisted, curled, have extra hairties. Be creative. Also if you have very short hair and you tie ut up, bits fall down at the back, front, everywhere. So add that in or add in clips (middle top). High ponies, low ponies, can make a person look completely different. Lastly braids...they can be really difficult to draw correct. Either braid something and look at it oorrrrr just to the left if the first braided thing is a cheat, hearts, it works. Also braids start thick at the top and dwindle and if you’re me; they have bits of hair sticking out the whole way down from layers. Lastly, accessories affect hair. They push it around, make it curl around if it's short. And if you wear a baseball cap and you have long hair then it will bump under the hat. Get a mirror and have a look, it's the easiest way. If you have short hair then look at others, or look up reference for yourself. Best thing to draw from is real life. Okay, apologies for spelling mistakes, if it was a bit wordy. I hope you all find this helpful and maybe gives you a little insight into how I work <33
